Patricia Coffee Brewers

The first to champion the standing-room only format in 2011, Patricia has been a cult favourite and daily haven for Melbourne's law district ever since.

Tucked away in Melbourne’s legal quarter, Patricia is run by coffee expert Bowen Holden and named after his grandmother. Designed as a space where simplicity, honesty and tradition permeate every detail, the small project activates an otherwise quiet corner of Melbourne’s hospitality scene.

Attention to detail underpins every aspect of the space, from graphic treatments to customer approach. Dark-stained timber joinery by local craftsman Kyran Starcevich forms the backbone of the interior, while marble benchtops and brass detailing add richness and old-world materiality to the serving and display areas.

Working with graphic studio Beyond The Pixels, a custom mosaic threshold nods to the café’s heritage format while neon signage suspended from the ceiling introduces a contemporary touch.

The compact footprint demanded inventive solutions for storage and amenity. A trap door in the service area conceals essential equipment, a cleaner’s sink is hidden within joinery, and window sills were adapted into bespoke running benches for customers to perch.

Patricia transforms a small space into a celebrated addition to Melbourne’s CBD, combining thoughtful design, tradition, and functionality in every corner.
